Dolls with Life

Living with Dolls

"It is my desire to express moods and feelings through my dolls, to create a world of colorful warmth and harmony, to bring back dreams of my childhood".

It is the diversity of doll-making which I find particularly fascinating: modelling well-proportioned heads and limbs of various types, transferring models into porcelain and painting them with pale Chinese colors, combining various textiles and designing detailed clothing, including hand-knitted silk socks.

I would like to define the "doll" theme in a new way. When working with dolls for me the art of creation is the describtion of the childlike character and not the depiction or portrayal of a child. Children are truthful. They show their feelings immediately in their facial expression and bearing. This expressiveness of the children fascinates me and gives me an inexhaustible host of impressions for creation. And just to the same extent as the alert eye looks into the expression and character of a doll, the art in it will be revealed to him.

Or, in the words of Antoine de St. Exupéry: "You can only see well with your heart, the essential things are invisible for your eyes."

Information about the production:

Each of my dolls is passionately hand-crafted in my studio. I do all important steps of the porcelain work myself. In order to give preference to the valuable materials and the superior quality of the tailoring, the clothing is consciously kept simple. The socks of all dolls are of finest cotton or silk and handknitted.

Only the best genuine hair or mohair wigs are used to underline the characters of the dolls. The jewelry in gold, silver, pearls, and precious stones is exclusively hand-crafted for Treffeisen dolls.

All accessories as hats and shoes are also designed by Ruth Treffeisen herself and she has her own models and lasts made, to guarantee their uniqueness and exclusivity. Ruth Treffeisen hats are of finest sisal and mohair felt cheroots. This is also the basis for all other accessories such as teddies, bunnies or bags.

Due to the exclusive use of natural materials and to hand-crafting some small differences in forms and colors of the dolls and accessories cannot be avoided – sometimes they are even desired. My fabric suppliers also do not guarantee a constant shade of the colors. All these factors contribute to an individual character – which makes each single one of my dolls unique. The heads and shoulder plates are linked with moveable joints. This enables you to change the expression according to your desires and moods – just try it!

Limitation:

Each artist doll is designed by Ruth Treffeisen and made in a small edition in our studio in Germany. Its high collectable value is outlined through a genuine hair wig, excellent workmanship, and painting as well as a high tailoring quality with loving details. Each single doll is hand-signed by me on the back of its head. We have worldwide limitations.
